Client Website Experience

With the client website I always had a set idea on what I wanted to do that also complied with the views of my client.

Ingenie wanted a stylish, classy and modern design that didn't attract away from the bags she creates.

While taking into consideration of her black and white colour preferences, I introduced a soft sage green to help symbolise her image for eco-friendly bags. This idea went over very well and she was more then happy with the result.

Ingenie was a pleasure to work with. She responded to all my questions within the week they were sent and was never a hassle about the design work.

The content was all already supplied by her current website.

The major issues of compiling this website were the spry navigation panel and the contact form.

It took a lot longer then it should to put together the spry navigation bar but the look and feel it gave to the overall design was worth it.
I took ingenie's previous website and took into account the accessability of her style pages and improved it so that all those pages could be accessed straight from the navigation panel through a drop down menu instead of having to click a link for the secondary menu to open.

Client Site Mock up Revision with Alternate Colour scheme

The layout has changed slightly. Now the Autumn 2010 looks more like a button. Home option added on nav. The subnav has been divided from the page.

This will be laid out as a Fixed layout.

Worst websites ever!

These are links to some of the WORST websites I have ever seen! Courtesy of Wepages that Suck.

Utah Ski Rental Homes

Not only is this websites background frightenly gaudy with a distracting animation but the horrible midi song playing in the background does not come with a stop button and bugs the crap out of the user.

The animations are childish and are not used in a practical way.

The page requires a lot of scrolling as well as the horrible marquee banner where the colours are blinding and do not contrast well at all.

There are too many colours used, the attention is drawn away constantly because there is just too much going on.

The creator seems to be going for a christmas theme, but fail with their use of ALL the colours of christmas rather then the ones that actually work.

The website is ONE PAGE ONLY. Making the user to scroll forever to access all content on the site including the links.

Font used is serif which should be reserved for print. Different sizes and colours used there is no consistency.

Pages are not consistent in design but are still just as bad.

The subpages are not titled correctly.

Website Mockup 2

This is another potential mockup for K8 graphics. The idea behind it refers to the cogs of my imagination and thought processes behind my designs. The plan for this design is to create movement of the cogs in flash creating a pleasing and innovative visual effect.

Currently I am not happy with the colour scheme. I will be aiming to go with much warmer tones to eliminate the current coldness of the layout.

Website Criteria Guidelines

The six most important fundamentals of webdesign are the following:

In Order.

Content, Structure and Navigation, Visual Design, Functionality, Interactivity, Overal Experience.

Content

The content of a website is the most important element of all. Readers are going to the site not because of how it looks but because of what information the site contains. The content in other words is the major draw card for the site.

Structure and Navigation

Navigation refers to how a user may access the various pages within a website and the structure consists of the positioning, framework and accessibility of the website. A navigation bar is an open display of what the site has to offer sort of like the index of a website.

Visual Design

Visual design refers to the design structure of the individual pages. It is a visual communication of ideas that should reflect and compliment the content of the website. The aim for visual design is to engage the viewer's interest without distracting from the content itself. The content must still be readable.

Functionality

Functionality refers to how usable the website is. Do the links work and link to the right pages? Does all media play on command? Are the images optimized and displaying? Does the website work in all browsers? Have different display platforms been taken into account? These are just some of the questions a web site designer should be taking into account when designing a site.

Interactivity

Interactivity involves the participation of a user on a website. It usually consists of the interactivity between the website and mouseclicks controlled by the user to produce a visual effect.

Overall Experience

The overal experience is a combination of all the above elements done well. It determines how long a user will want to stay on your page for. A bad overall experience would make a user less likely to want to stay and also would not encourage them to return to your site. If the overall experience is a good one, your users will want to stay for a longer amount of time and may even return and/or reccomend your site to other viewers.

Helpful Links

Stuff It- Not only are these little bags delightfully handy, but the design of this site is crisp and modern. The pointer arrow that appears as you hover the navigation links adds a small touch of interactivity. However a disadvantage of this site is the fact that everytime you click a link on the navigation panel it opens a new window making your workspace cluttered with extra windows.

Fat Cow - Is a web hosting website I have been considering going with over the last few months for my handmade jewelry website. I may consider going through fatcow for K8 graphics.
I found out about fat cow through a couple of websites that listed the top 10 value for money webhosting companies where Fat Cow triumphed with first place on all three of the sites I visited.
When I first visited fat cow they were offering a deal of roughly $4.00 US a month for webhosting services.

I was previously with GoDaddy. I strongly recommend AGAINST going with GoDaddy webhosting. My website was hacked and a virus was bestowed upon my site making it so users could not view my website without getting a horrifying virus warning!
What attracts me to Fat Cow hosting are their low fees of course but mainly the fact that they offer SSL security in their package - for a much better rate then GoDaddy who was asking for extra dollars to add that in!
GoDaddy also has a nasty reputation for stealing your webdomains when they become available and charging you an arm and a leg to buy them back.

to be continued...

Website Mockup

This is just a work in progress mockup for my portfolio website.

note to myself: I find it much too busy and strays completely from the design I had in my head. I'd like to try replacing the turquoise in the background with white, grey or green.
